Join us for next month's free webinar: “Black Futures Month: Cultivating Safer Workplaces for Black Employees” on Wednesday, February 8 from 10am-11:30am PT with Shalyma Cambridge, COC and Shelley-Anne Vidal from the HRx team.
Since the first person of African descent first arrived, in 1608, on the soil of what we now call Canada, the Black population in this country has grown to over 1.2 million people. This growth has not been without adversity and discrimination in both community and workplace environments. Recognizing past, on-going and systemic anti-Black racism embedded into institutions and accepted practices is a key step in building a different type of future – one that is equitable, empowering and inclusive. In this session, we will explore: 💥 How anti-Black racism has been established within a Canadian context 💥 The impact it has on Black individuals, particularly within the workplace settings 💥 Concepts like the Black Tax and silent labour 💥 Considerations for building safer environments where Black colleagues may often still be “the only”, “the first”, or one of “very few” Register here: https://lnkd.in/eGMFPURm The road to writing my story was not easy, but it was a lot of fun with Coach Rasie Bamigbade - Leadership and Book Coach in my corner! To learn a little about my writing journey check out this interview on YouTube! As we all know, effective listening is just as important as clear speaking when it comes to to good communication. Although many of us are aware of the importance of good listening, sometimes we (even the best communicators) forget the basics of great listening. Travis Bradberry, wrote a great article entitled The 7 Things Great Listeners Do Differently. Bradberry is the Co-author of Emotional Intelligence 2.0 and President at TalentSmart. The article serves as a good reminder of the 7 things that you (and I) can do to become and maintain great listening skills.
As you read these tips, think about what you can do differently to become a more effective communicator. The key to good listening is to focus on the speaker and not what you want to say next. Here is a summary of the list: 1. Put away your phone 2. Ask good question 3. Practice reflective listening 4. Use positive body language 5. Don’t pass judgment 6. Keep your mouth shut 7. Bringing it all together To read Travis Bradberry's full article click here |
